According to the 2024 epidemiological report from the Regional Public Health Department (DRSP), 5,458 cases have been confirmed, a record rate of 257.3 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in the last 25 years.<sup data-fn=\"cd80f19a-cfd1-48cf-8c95-6e6b22db2db1\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#cd80f19a-cfd1-48cf-8c95-6e6b22db2db1\" id=\"cd80f19a-cfd1-48cf-8c95-6e6b22db2db1-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is most affected by gonorrhea?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistics show that <strong>men remain the most affected<\/strong>, accounting for 82% of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, adults represent the most affected groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women: 25 to 34 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Men: 25 to 44 years old<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term trend is worrying: since 1999, infections have increased by 1,104% among men and 987% among women. When symptoms do occur, they may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Throat<\/strong> : persistent sore throat, irritation, or mild pain when swallowing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Urethra<\/strong> : burning sensation when urinating, unusual discharge in men and sometimes women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vagina\/cervix<\/strong> : unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anus<\/strong> : pain, itching, or rectal discharge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms can be subtle and easily confused with a cold or minor irritation, which is why regular screening is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding gonorrhea and its risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although gonorrhea does not always cause visible symptoms, <strong>its consequences can be serious<\/strong>. Although this number remains limited, it highlights the importance of strengthening prevention efforts to reduce transmission.<sup data-fn=\"6f2de8cb-0e34-4c88-ad42-953225c092c4\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#6f2de8cb-0e34-4c88-ad42-953225c092c4\" id=\"6f2de8cb-0e34-4c88-ad42-953225c092c4-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all cases of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection, it is essential to take a culture sample before treatment in order to obtain an antibiogram and verify the sensitivity of the strain.
