Have questions?
How long does it take to detect an STI after exposure?
The time it takes to detect an infection (known in medicine as the serological window) varies depending on the STI.
- Chlamydia: 14 days
- Gonorrhea: 7 days
- Syphilis: 12 weeks
- Hepatitis B: 12 weeks
- Hepatitis C: 12 weeks
- HIV: 8 weeks
What should I do if I have symptoms or if one of my partners tests positive?
Prelib offers an evaluation service for screening asymptomatic STIs.
If you have symptoms, lesions, or have been in contact with an STI, an evaluation by a healthcare professional at a clinic (in person) is recommended.
Which STIs are not screened for by Prelib?
Prelib does not screen for the following STIs:
- hepatitis A,
- genital herpes,
- genital warts or condylomas, such as HPV,
If you have any doubts about these STIs, consult a healthcare professional at a clinic in person.
When should I see a healthcare professional in person at a clinic?
If you are in one of the following situations, consult a healthcare professional in person at a clinic instead of using Prelib's services:
- You are experiencing symptoms of STIs.
- One of your partners has been diagnosed with an STI.
- You have had non-consensual sex (sexual assault).
- You are pregnant.
- You are under 15 years of age.
Why should I get tested?
Prelib's services are recommended in the following cases:
- you wish to undergo routine STI screening;
- you are in a stable relationship and want to stop using condoms;
- you have doubts about your current or past partners;
- you have had possible contact with another person's blood.
How long does it take to get an appointment for a screening after completing my medical questionnaire?
The appointment slots are visible as soon as you have registered online. It is often possible to get an appointment on the same day or the next day.
What do I need to do before coming in for my screening?
- Refrain from urinating in the hour before the test.
- Bring a valid form of identification.
- Bring your Quebec health insurance card (RAMQ), if you have one.
- Bring your debit or credit card to pay the fees.
What are the options for the screening?
There are three options for screenings:
- Service public : tu obtiens tes résultats en 10 jours ouvrables. Il y a des frais de 5 à 15 $ pour le transport de tes échantillons vers l’hôpital. Ceux-ci sont couverts par Prelib pour les nouveaux utilisateurs à Québec et à Sherbrooke, jusqu’au 31 août 2025*.
- Private service: You will receive your results within 24 to 48 business hours after they are received by the laboratory. There is a fee ranging from $150 to $375.
- Prelib can also give you a prescription so that you can have your screening at the location of your choice.
Once there, how long does the process take?
The process takes about 20 minutes.
I want to change or cancel my appointment.
Once you've booked your appointment, you can change it without penalty up to 4 hours before the chosen time via your file. MyPrelib.
Changing your appointment, less than 4 hours before the chosen timeyou will be charged an administration fee of $35, plus applicable taxes, and you will be required to pay the teleconsultation fee.
How long will it take to receive my results?
It depends on where your samples are analyzed:
- If the analysis is carried out by a public service, it usually takes 7 to 10 working days to obtain the results.
- Si l’analyse est faite par le service privé Dynacare, tu recevras tes résultats dans un délai de 24 à 48 heures ouvrables après leur réception par le laboratoire.
- If your results are still not online 3 weeks after you have taken your samples, please contact us at [email protected]. We'll get back to you as soon as possible.
How and when will I get my results?
You’ll receive an email no later than 7 business days after your samples are taken to schedule a phone consultation. This consultation is important and mandatory, whether your results are negative or positive.
Your results will be available online in your MonPrelib file immediately after your telephone consultation with a healthcare professional from the Prelib team.
If your results are positive or if additional tests need to be done, you will also be contacted by phone and email. This will allow our team to guide you on the next steps, based on your result.
If you have any problems viewing or understanding your results, please contact us at [email protected].
Where can I receive treatment?
Prelib works in collaboration with the Quorum clinic, where you can get an appointment quickly if you wish. Everything can be arranged online.
If you prefer to go to another clinic or see your family doctor, you can do that too. The important thing is that you follow through on the recommendations Prelib will make to you if your results are positive.
I have a Quebec health insurance card (RAMQ).

These samples require special, controlled transport conditions. You'll have to pay this fee when you visit the Prelib center for your samples.
They cost $5, plus applicable taxes, if there is no blood sampling, and $15, plus applicable taxes, if there is blood sampling.
If you prefer to have your samples taken somewhere other than Prelib, you can pick up your request at the center at no additional cost.
